Thanks for all the tips and suggestions - I'll check them out and try to keep somewhat open-minded. I suppose my parents went through the same thing but I honestly don't think the "noise" we listened to was half as bad as some of the stuff today.

After watching Janis Joplin on the Dick Cavett Show (thanks to a link on here) I've been blasting a lot of that funky lady's music.

I have posted the quote from Grace Slick before: "the music kids listen too should make their parents throw up!"

As was discussed at great length, that line makes me cringe because it implies there are no "standards of quality" (here goes the post modernity debate), with which I wholeheartedly disagree.

I think that real "music" should have reflect certain fundamental qualities for "us" to like it, and generally this is true...music that lasts really is generally something we can all listen too (I am not talking fringe).

So, I get Grace's point about necessary "revolutions" each generation, but NO, when I played "Rosalie McFall" to my completely non DEAD parents (who actually are dead, ahem...sorry, mom) they loved it, or when they heard a number of tunes off the AmBeaut album, etc.

Of course, they wouldn't have gone for Jack White, but they could've appreciated his ability while watching him (with the sound turned down).

Guess I'm just a perv. The music I listen to makes my kids (and my friends' kids) throw up much more than vice versa. They shouldn't have played Crazy Frog to me, knowing I'd love it for years instead of being annoyed by it, and the hard techno version of Badger, Badger is STILL in my playlist. If they play Slayer, I play Caninus or Cannibal Corpse. If they play Madonna or Lada Gaga, I play Lucille Bogan or Fred Wolff. If they play Sonic Youth, I get out the first Chicago Transit Authority album & play Free Form Guitar. And I needn't even mention chiptunes. Or John Oswald (at least one kid's first exposure to Michael Jackson... AND the Grateful Dead - muhahahahaha!)

If you DON'T want your kid to become a Deadhead, make them listen to the music the Dead listened to. A childhood diet of Berio, Doc Watson, and drumming rudiments will GUARANTEE your kid becomes a rapper in retaliation.

And no modern music whatsoever is nearly as annoying as a steady diet of fifties and sixties novelty songs - it's better than the classics for clearing a 7-11 parking lot. I mean, how many times can YOU listen to Wally Cox do "There Is A Tavern In The Town"? or ANYONE do "They're Coming To Take Me Away", in Italian?

Seriously, I think someone needs to rap over "They're Coming To Take Me Away"... it's a great beat.

as for what they actually listen to, one is currently learning Decemberists' covers, and gave up trying to convince me Sonic Youth is genius, but hasn't given up on Radiohead yet - I can't argue with that, Dead or no Dead.

Militärgerichtsbarkeit ist zu Gerechtigkeit, was militärische Musik zu Musik ist.

Returned late last night from an 18 hour round trip excursion with my 16 yo riding shotgun. I had brought a varied stack of my own cds thinking I might take the opportunity to further enlighten her, but I was really glad I also bought an adapter that enabled us to play her ipod thru the cassette player, as opposed to her splitting her attention between me and an earpiece in her right ear. A great bonding experience ensued as music is just as important to her as it always has been for me. We had the greatest car ride; our conversation and appreciation flowed as she played dj. I found her stuff very tolerable (the artists’ names didn’t stick with me, and she also has loads of soundtracks from various musicals.)

Jessandra - at seven my kids were enthralled with “Not For Kids Only” – have you tried that one? Although if they are exposed to the stuff you mention it might be too late! (My kids were raised with limited exposure to modern radio/tv )

Oh goodness yes, Not for Kids Only, has been a fav of theirs for years! So is Reckoning. They each have their own copies and know all the words.

I'm not really worried that their tastes will differ from ours eventually - that's normal, it's just some of the things they are picking up from the radio are just vulgar & horrible and they really are still too young. I can't forbid them to listen to the radio so I am hoping this is just a phase.

We certainly have more control over their TV watching time :-)
